Timers and kiosk setup (Android)

Each screen has a settings page (the gear icon on the Screens page) with Timers: Turn On, Turn Off and Reboot, by day and time. What a timer can do depends on the device:

• Any Android device: Turn Off blanks the screen and lets the display sleep. Turn On wakes it and resumes, even from the lock screen. Reboot restarts the player app.
• Android in kiosk mode: Turn Off switches the screen off straight away, Reboot restarts the whole device, and the player starts by itself after power-up.
• iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and the web player: the system does not allow apps to sleep, wake or reboot the device. Turn Off shows a black screen and Reboot reloads the player.

No app can switch a device fully off, on any platform.

Turning on kiosk mode

This is a one-time step per device, done from a computer with adb. Android only accepts it on a device that has no accounts signed in, so do it on a new or factory-reset device before adding a Google account.

1. Install onday player and pair the screen.
2. On the device, enable Developer options and USB (or network) debugging, then connect with adb.
3. Run: adb shell dpm set-device-owner uk.onday.onday_player/.OndayAdminReceiver
4. Within a minute the screen’s settings page shows a Kiosk badge.

To undo it, factory-reset the device. On Android 12 and later, “Turn On” is most punctual if the app is allowed to set exact alarms: adb shell appops set uk.onday.onday_player SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM allow. Without it the screen may wake a few minutes late.

• Device timers. Set Turn On, Turn Off and Reboot times per screen, plus a “Restart now” button. See what each device supports.
• Smoother video. Videos are downloaded once and played from the device instead of being streamed on every loop.
• Video resolution per screen. Choose 1080p, 720p or 480p for a screen that struggles with large videos.
• Black idle screen. When nothing is scheduled the screen is plain black, and Android devices let the display sleep until the next schedule.

• Emergency messages now reach every screen. A broadcast from the Screens page replaces whatever is playing within about 15 seconds, including on Apple TV, and normal playback resumes when you stop it.
• Edit schedules. Use the pencil on any schedule to change its playlist, days, times or priority without recreating it.
• Device groups. Put screens in a group on the Screens page and give the group one schedule. Change it once and every screen in the group follows.
• Timezone. Schedules now run on your workspace’s timezone, set in Settings, instead of UTC.
• Rotation fixed. Portrait screens no longer show content upside down, and there is a new “Landscape (upside down)” option. The “Nothing scheduled” screen rotates too.

• Portrait screens. Set a display’s Orientation on the Screens page and everything it plays is rotated to match.
• Per-video rotation. A video that plays sideways can be given its own turn in Media.

onday player 1.0.3 · September 2026 · Android TV, Android, iPad/iPhone

• Screen stays on during playback. Fixed an issue where the display could go to sleep after a video finished playing. The player now keeps the screen awake for as long as it is open.
• If your TV still switches off after a few hours, turn off its own power-saving timer (for example “Auto Power Off” or “Eco / Energy saving”) in the TV’s settings. This timer is built into the TV and apps can’t override it.
